Chinese New Year - National Ballet of China (matinée)

This is a gloriously inventive take on Tchaikovsky’s much loved ballet, The Nutcracker, by the National Ballet of China. Since its foundation in 1959, the company has developed an outstanding roster of artists, trained in the Russian tradition. The ballet opens with a dizzyingly colourful scene at a temple fair in Beijing, where people are preparing to celebrate New Year with masks and paper lanterns. The journey continues to the fairy lands of the Kingdom of the Crane and the Porcelain Kingdom. There are monsters and little tigers, a graceful Dance of Fans, a whirling Dance of Spinning Tops and a glittering Dance of Gold Ingots, coming to a thrilling conclusion with an explosion of firecrackers.
